Parenthetical Documentation
Parenthetical documentation appears in your paper to show the reader what source you used for a quote, phrase, fact or idea and exactly where you found the information.
The Author's name and a page reference identify the source and the specific location of the source you have used.
e.g. Ancient writers attributed many inventions to Pythagoras in the sixth century BC (Marcuse 197).
The parenthetical reference indicates the information comes from page 197 of the book Marcuse included in your ALPHABETICALLY arranged list of WORKS CITED or also known as your BIBLIOGRAPHY.
The bibliography (or Works Cited) gives the reader complete publication information for the source.
Plagarism
Plagarism is using another's ideas or words in your writing without acknowledging the source. To plagarize is to give the impression that you have written or thought something that actually comes from someone else. As long as you acknowledge where you got your information you may use the words or thoughts of others.
